COVID-19 Updates:
4th of July Reminders & the COVID-Diabetes Link

“We’re going to have to go against some of our natural instincts when it comes to being around family members and family reunions.” With COVID-19 cases on the rise in South Carolina, Dr. Thaddeus John Bell encourages us to remember to use caution, even when meeting up with family members over the 4th of July holiday weekend. “The thing to remember,” he says, “Is that COVID-19 is killing more African Americans than any other group of people.”

He reminds us of some precautions to take while celebrating the holiday:

  • Be selective about who you’re going to be around, for their sake and for yours. (Know something about their health status and who they’ve been around.)
  • Wear your mask at every opportunity, making sure it covers your nose and mouth.
  • Practice social distancing (6 feet).

Dr. Bell shares new research showing that there have been instances of patients being admitted to the hospital with COVID-19 and no prior diabetic diagnosis, who are later diagnosed with diabetes. Those patients, he says, should be monitored closely and have regular A1Cs going forward.
