Gun violence is a challenge in big cities across our nation, and now a growing problem as well here in the Lowcountry. Sylvia Blake’s son Bradley was a victim of gun violence, and out of his death she found the motivation to create the Bradley Blake Foundation, a non-profit created to bring local awareness to the gun violence issue. Every June the organization hosts the Tri-County Orange Walk to help raise awareness of the cause, and funds for the non-profit. This year’s event is June 7th in Moncks Corner. Blake explained the reason of using the color orange and also provided specific details on the walk. She also discussed her son’s death and how she is trying to use her experience to assist others in similar circumstances. Blake also shared programs her foundation offers to the community.

SEGMENT #2: Swim Across America/Charleston/Kiawah
GUEST: Jana Chanthabane, Event director
ISSUE: Health & Human Services
For the 9th year, individuals have an opportunity to take a swim and help win the fight against cancer. The annual nationwide Swim Across America event is on June 7 with the local Charleston/Kiawah swim happening off Kiawah Island. Jana Chanthabane is the local event director and herself a cancer survivor. Chanthabane explained how she became involved and her motivation to continue to make each year’s event a success in raising money to benefit the local Hollings Cancer Society. While the event is called “Swim Across America,” Chanthabane shared exactly where the swim would take place and provided opportunities for people to assist beyond swimming in the event. She also talked about the unique elements included in the local event and why people should take part.
