With the April 15th tax deadline looming, individuals may be looking for additional deductions. South Carolina residents may not realize the tax advantages of Future Scholar, South Carolina’s 529 College Savings Program. South Carolina State Treasurer Curtis Loftis is the administrator of the Future Scholar Program and shared how anyone could get a state tax deduction on their South Carolina taxes by making a contribution to a 529 fund before the tax deadline. The Treasurer also shared other Future Scholar tax advantages, including that the funds grow tax free and there is no federal or state taxes on withdrawals used for qualified educational expenses. He also discussed how Future Scholar isn’t just for college, but funds can be used for technical and trade schools and even K-12 expenses.

ISSUE: Veterans/Homelessness
It’s a sad but highly reported issue, homelessness among our nation’s veterans. Saturday, March 28th is the Inaugural Housing Heroes Festival at the Sons of the American Legion Post 166 in Goose Creek. The event is being put on by Altruistic Events, Inc. as a family-friendly community fundraiser supporting veteran housing and stability programs through Lowcountry Veterans Home. Jessica Greibesland, the Altruistic Events President share why the organization put together the event and provide details on some of the festival activities including raffles, a Kids Zone with activities and local vendors & community partners onsite. Steve Lowe from the organization joined to talk about the American Legion’s role in this event, and other ways they are reaching out to help Veterans in need.
