Rotary Clubs are sources for public service across the nation, and here in the Lowcountry. Each spring, the Daniel Island Rotary Club teams with nine other area clubs to host the annual Charleston Duck Race. Evan Murray of the Daniel Island Rotary Club is this year’s Race Director and gave background on the event, that has raised millions of dollars for local charities. This year’s event is at a new location, and Murray shared the reason for the move, where the event will now take place, and how individuals could purchase a duck, and potentially win up to $10,000. Murray also provided information on how the event benefits the community and which local charities would be receiving funds from this year’s race.

SEGMENT #2: Summerville Family YMCA

ISSUE: Youth & Child Services
The leading cause of death among children up to 4 years of age in the United States is drowning. And, according to the CDC, South Carolina ranks 9th in our nation in drowning deaths. Again this summer, the Summerville Family YMCA will host their “Splash into Safety” program. The YMCA’s Marketing Director, Justin Ramel, providing the background for the purpose of the program, and broke down this summer’s schedule. The YMCA takes a mobile pool to rural areas, St. Stephen and Walterboro this year, and provides swimming lessons for just $1 dollar a lesson. The Splash into Safety program focuses on life-saving skills for children and also engages parents in learning important skills to help keep their children safe. In addition to the specifics on this program, Ramel also share details on other programs the YMCA is offering families this summer.
