SEGMENT #1: MUSC Hollings Cancer Center

The first Saturday in November, hundreds of riders jump on their bicycles and ride to help win the fight against cancer. The event is Lowvelo, a benefit ride for the MUSC Hollings Cancer Center. Chris Winn is the Director of Lowvelo who explained how the name of the event was created, and what the overall point of the event is. Lowvelo is not just one ride, but a series of four rides, each a different distance, including an 80-mile course. Riders collect pledges with 100% of the rider money going directly to fund cancer research at the MUSC Hollings Cancer Center. Winn spoke of the work being funded at the cancer center thanks to the event, which has a $1 million dollar goal this year.

SEGMENT #2: Carolina Children’s Charity
GUEST: Sonya Beale, Executive Director
ISSUE: Children/Youth Health
Since 1987, Carolina Children’s Charity has been assisting Lowcountry children and their families. Sonya Beale is the Executive Director of the nonprofit and is about to celebrate 20 years with the Charity. Beale explained how the Charity helps children with birth defects and childhood disease and the steps a Lowcountry family needs to take to receive assistance. Additionally, she shared stories of the more than 4,000 children they have helped, and talked about way, beyond donating money, how individuals can assist Carolina Children’s Charity. The organization has a long relationship with area fire departments and Beale discussed how that came about and its importance today. Plus, she provided the details on their next fundraiser, the 22nd annual Care, Give, Run on Sept. 27, a family friendly 5K event.
